Why? because eBay enables artists to represent themselves with absolutely no intermediary. Auction expenses are affordable and eBay provides advertising and a high volume of viewers and buyers to art auctions. Brick and mortar galleries charge the artist anywhere from 30% to 50% of the final value of the artwork. Artists pay entry fees for art fairs and shows and Slides, travel expenses, and other marketing expenses are usually high.
2- It is convenient. You can shop with your PJ's at a click of mouse. Did we say eBay is convenient.? You can purchase any time of the day, or night. Pay online and wait for your package to arrive on the mail. How easy is that?

to add to d borges's post above. no intimidation or attitude you might feel if you strolled through a gallery. no sales people, just you and the artist, hopefully engaging in a conversation and mutual appreciation. you should buy art if you like and don't worry what others might think or whether it's done in this style or that style. it should just make you happy or move you in some way. :)
