purchasing art on ebay (or any online venue) can be fun and pleasant. but as with all shopping, it is better to be well-informed:

<><><> who are you buying from? READ the comments left in the feedback and maybe even some of the feedback the seller has left. if buying directly from the artist is important to you, ask the artist if he or she is the artist and the composition is his or hers. i always welcome questions about my art and try to set people at ease about where it's coming from (my brain!)

<><><> what’s it made of? acrylic, oil, pastels, metal, other materials? if paint is used, what kind of paint is used?

<><><> what’s it on? canvas, wood, board, etc? if a painting is on canvas, is the canvas stretched over a frame, mounted, unstretched, etc?
<><><> do I need a frame? could you hang the painting straight from the box or are other steps required to give it a finished look? for example, are the sides without staples and painted so that it has a "framed" look without buying a frame? the term "gallery-wrapped" is often used to describe such "ready to display" pieces. or is the canvas / painting on a flat rigid support such as masonite - if so, the painting probably will look odd (there are exceptions) without additional framing. this can be very expensive. likewise, if the painting is unstretched, you will have to hire someone (or enlist a nice friend) to stretch the painting before it can be displayed.

<><><> colors if you want precise color- or shade- coordination, please be aware that digital pictures can look very different from monitor to monitor and computer to computer. i have noticed huge variations in color and contrast when viewing my own pics especially on older monitors and laptops. bottom line - if the precise shade or degree of darkness is essential, i would recommend purchasing a piece in person.

<><><> how big is the piece? this info should be stated in the description. if you are looking for a particular size or you’re purchasing a piece to display in a specific location, a good idea is to tape together pieces of standard sized paper (or newspaper) to the size stated in the description. or if you don’t know what size might look right (or wrong) for a particular location, this is a good way of getting an idea of what works (or doesn’t).

<><><> finish - is the painting varnished or have some other topcoat? Is the finish matte or glossy?

<><><> shipping ~ many paintings sold on ebay or elsewhere are charged at oversized rates by all carriers.

i hope this info was useful ~ some of the info may not be important to you but they are things I consider when I purchase art. I might have left out some info, but will supplement ~
feel free drop me a line if you have any more questions about buying art on the web or you'd like me to elaborate on any of the explanations above.
